things im gonna miss in the new anime: usagi actually emoting
You’re joking right?
We saw her emoting in the trailer, but the thing was only a minute long and by no means 100% of her emotional responses.
What the fuck with with this fandom? A trailer is meant as a preview of what’s to come. It’s not the entire fucking show.
You people are such babies.
You don’t say, it’s not the entire fucking show! However, it still dictates the general mood and quality we should be expecting from the show, and thanks to a simple thing called basic observation skills, i can deduce — yes, even from this one minute trailer! — that Usagi will not be as expressive as she was in the original anime. Since that is something you seem to lack, I’ll be as kind as to demonstrate, comparing her expressions in the trailer to those she makes in episode one.
Here is Usagi running to school. You cannot discern a single grain of personality from this, because she is doing the most generic dainty anime girl run on Earth. Her mouth open in a tiny ‘o’, her pinky fucking raised as she runs… we’ve obviously got a delicate pretty princess on our hands.
Here, on the other hand, she’s running while yawning comically large, looking absolutely miserable that morning has come, and making a halfassed, wholly unladylike attempt to cover her mouth. Which is all actually indicative of the type of person Usagi is! Incredible!
Here is Usagi first meeting Luna. As you can see, we once again have a generically delicate anime girl face, her mouth basically a speck, eyebrows raised the bare minimum amount required to express surprise and that’s it.
Meanwhile, old Usagi’s reaction Luna goes from this…
Just a bit of a difference, wouldn’t you say?
In this next one, from the flow of her hair and clothes, it’s safe to assume it’s just after Usagi has finished transforming for the first time. You might notice a slight pattern: 90% of all expressions Usagi makes in the goddamn trailer are ‘faint ladylike surprise’. Though her mouth is open, that’s pretty much the only part of her that emotes — her eyes are completely dead.
Meanwhile, old Usagi’s reaction….
Lastly, the famous “I’ll punish you” face. Again, tiny mouth, delicately furrowed eyebrows, the absolute bare minimum required to get across determination.
As opposed to the much fiercer old version.
In closing: it’s very obvious that the most important thing about the girls in the new anime is to be pretty. Their designs are so focused on that that it actually limits their ability to emote. When Usagi, the single most expressive character in the entire show, spends the whole trailer looking like a lifeless plastic doll, you have fucked that shit up.
While the old anime considered Usagi a child, one who was unladylike and undelicate, and therefore didn’t shy from often giving her expressions that were silly and comical — yes, she’s the cute main character, but it’s also okay for you to laugh at her, and for her to not be pretty all the time!! — it’s plain to see the new anime is taking the opposite approach, and making sure that every single shot of Usagi’s face gets across how ~beautiful~ and ~delicate~ she is. Her mouth is literally incapable of stretching beyond an inch wide, because that’s just not PRETTY enough! Her irises can’t ever shrink to show surprise, because then we wouldn’t see what a pretty shiny blue they are! Usagi is the type of person whose entire personality should come through in their expressions. In the new anime trailer, there is literally not a single thing you can tell about her as a character from looking at her face.
In short: those guys blew it.
Hope that helps!!
Regard my horribly drawn heads.
